HISTORY

Strathroy United Church celebrates a long history of witness in this community. The congregation dates back to 1836 when the first Methodist service was held in the home of James Cooper. In the 1850's the Great Western Railway built a line from London to Sarnia. By the time of its completion the population of Strathroy had grown from 400 to over 1000 residents. As the number of people living here increased it became necessary to build larger worship places. From the first log cabin church built in 1840, the congregation moved to a small frame church in 1851. New growth soon made it inadequate and a much larger building was constructed in 1862 on the north-east corner of North and Maria Streets. Still the population continued to increase rapidly. By 1870, when Strathroy was made a town, the number of residents was over 3000. Another new church was needed. A site was obtained and a manse and new church built in 1879 - at a cost of $15,747.59 for all three. Included in the building was a gas lighting system that was unique in the area at that time. This building has served the congregation well, having been the centre of congregational life for over 100 years. With church union in 1925, Strathroy Methodist Church became Strathroy United Church. In 1956, the cornerstone was laid for the new wing that would provide better meeting room facilities. The building was made “wheel-chair accessible” in 1993. The rich history of the places of worship for the congregation offers and outward symbol of the deep and abiding faith of its people as well as a witness of God’s presence to the community at large. A history of the Church published in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the present building offers a more complete account of Strathroy United Church, its people and its building. May the faith of those who have served God so faithfully in the past enrich the faith of those who become part of the life of the church foryears to come.
