FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Question
Been "playing"
for 25+ years. Usually play about 1 1/2 games
a week. Got trouble with consistency. One week I'll shoot 82
the next week a 96!! It seems my body forgets the mechanics of
the golf swing. Honestly, I do it all wrong. Then,
without warning, it's back. Some frustrating !!!
Help, if you can, please.
Answer
John, you must try to find
something that "clicks" as a swing key when you are
playing well. I suggest that you incorporate holding your
follow -through position until the ball lands...on ALL shots.
Then in future games, make the priority your finish
position....just get there!...I am sure that the good swings
will stay with you and consistency will improve...
Question
Peter, in the back-swing,
should my wrists stay locked to the top? I have tried this in
my backyard with a 3 iron and it seems to work. Thanks. Rob.
Answer
For those reading this, we
have been working on "firming" up Rob's wrist action
in the back-swing. In other words, less "hinging".
Yes, the feeling of firmness in all swings is important to
break the habit of over using the wrist action and getting the
club past parallel.
Question
How do I determine the
length of my clubs? I bought some
used clubs ( matching 5,7,9 irons by Spalding and a Custom 3
iron).
Answer
Thanks for your question.
Most people can use a standard length club except if they are
extremely tall or short. The average length for a #5 iron for
men is 37.5 inches from the heel of the club (or the ground)
to the end of the grip. New standards are longer than they
used to be but that is usually found in graphite shafts. The
difference in length between clubs is .1/2 inches. Therefore
if your #5 iron is 37.5 inches...the #3 iron should be 38.5
inches. If they differ much from these "standards"
let me know and I'll advise.
Question
Is it necessary to wear a
glove?
Answer
No, it is not as some of
the best players including Fred Couples do not wear one. Those
who don't use a glove have "trained " their top hand
to be fairly strong therefore keeping the club in control.
However, if we look at percentages, most good players
including of course Tiger Woods wear a glove. A glove improves
the contact between the hand and the grip and helps to stop
the club from twisting during the golf swing. Most good
players remove their glove while putting and occasionally when
chipping when control isn't needed but feel is. If you choose
to wear a glove remember that the more expensive the glove,
the thinner the leather is (more feel). However the expensive
gloves do not last as long if you have a bad
grip. Many find that their glove wears out in the area where
the butt of the club rests. This is a result of not
maintaining proper pressure throughout your swing or by
holding the club "too long" . Shorten up on the club
a little and make some one-handed swings part of your practice
sessions and pre-shot routine. If you do decide to wear a
glove make sure that is on the "tight side" as all
gloves stretch a little. A loose glove doesn't help at all.
Question
There are so many balls on
the market - what type should I use?
Answer
It is just as confusing for
the Professional stocking his shop. If you are what we
describe as an average player who wants more distance select a
"distance ball" that usually is of
2-piece construction. If you are a mid to low handicapper and
have higher clubhead speed, select a ball that offers more
spin. The last thing the weekend warrior needs is more spin!
Remember balls spin sideways too!
Question
I don't really know how far
I hit the ball with each club - is that important?
Answer
Yes, yes, yes. Go to a
range and determine your yardages. Not only does it help in
club selection, it instills confidence.
