General Funeral Information
The Funeral
A funeral is an
acknowledgment that a life has been lived and an opportunity to pay
tribute to that life. A funeral allows family and friends to remember
and honour a lost loved one in a special and personal way. A funeral
serves as a gathering place where family and friends can provide
emotional and physical support to one another. A funeral helps to
confirm the reality and finality of death, helps to get the grief
process started and often provides closure for the bereaved.
The funeral is meant to
facilitate mental healing and often religious rituals. A funeral does
not have to be expensive, just meaningful.
Visitation
Visitation allows family,
friends and the community to show their respect for the deceased,
express their feelings and provide support for the family of the
deceased. It is a time of reflection and sharing of emotions. Visitation
is most commonly held the day before the funeral and is often from
2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Visitation facilitates the viewing of the deceased,
viewing of floral arrangements and memorial donations and interaction
with the deceased's family.
Government
In Ontario, funeral homes and funeral
directors are regulated by the Board of Funeral Services.
Laws to govern the funeral service
profession are enacted by the Ontario Legislature and administered by
the Board of Funeral Services. The Board regulates funeral homes,
funeral directors, transfer services and operators as well as the
education and licensing of funeral directors and transfer service
operators.
